How to use a folder in node_modules?

I've been reading the documentation and other comments/issues about using the sources config option. In this comment #1004 (comment) the example uses a directory in node_modules, however whenever I try to do this no content is found.

What I've tried:

sources: [
  {
    ...
    base: resolve(__dirname, './node_modules/news-content')
  }
]

sources: [
  'node_modules/news-content
]

However, if I use the same content but from local instead

sources: [
  {
    ...
    base: resolve(__dirname, '../news-content')
  }
]

This works perfectly, so I know there is nothing wrong with the directory/content itself.

Has anyone got a working example using a folder from node_modules? Or does this not work?
