I would really like to be able to customize the "Tab 1/2" part of MiniTabline. My usecase is that I implemented a system myself to name tabs. This is a try to stay atop of different tasks I have to work on concurrently.

My suggestion would be to add a field to the config which is a function. This function would return what to print instead of "Tab 1/2". Then use this function inside make_tabpage_section.

I would also be willing to implement a PR for this if this gets your blessing.

This was already discussed in #1539. The current situation is that 'mini.tabline' is by design very low-config. Adding a new config field is not a problem, it is deciding if that is necessary what is complicated.

Could you please elaborate (a bit) about why you want/need custom formatting of tabpage section?

Hi, first of all thanks for considering and all of mini.nvim.

I use neovim at work and as work is I usually start on some changes in our codebase and then this gets interrupted by something with higher priority or somebody has a quick question and I want to look at other files. Or simply I need to wait on a response from someone before I can complete something.

The way I use tabs is then I have one tab for one of these "contexts" of work. For example:

• Develop new Feature A -> Tab 1
• Fix High Priority Bug B -> Tab 2 (interrupted Work in Tab 1)
• Get a question in a meeting and open the corresponding files to show something -> Tab 3

Now This works fine up to a point. But now I am constantly around 5-7 tabs and it gets hard to keep in mind which tab is for what.

For this reason I implemented a way to name the tabs and persist this in the session (with mini.sessions). Basically I just set a tab local variable like vim.t.tabname. Now I would like to show this variable on the top instead of the Tab 1/2.
This way I could name my tabs like Develop new Feature A etc.

Thank you and no worries if you don't want to include it, then I will drop mini.tabline and roll my own. I just figured it would be a (technical) simple change though I understand it might not be a concept wise simple change. So no pressure!

Oh, I see. Tabpage names is an interesting idea. So much so that I think it might be good to have built-in for Vim/Neovim (as there are currently buffer names).

I'll think about the best way to do that. A dedicated section formatting function is nice, but maybe it can be optimized for this use case also.
