Websockets / producer-consumer metrics

Greetings,
I am hoping to get some input on the best practices for recording metrics and alerting on websocket based traces. The spanmetrics-connector is not great for this use case, because the initial socketio span only represents the initial consumption of a message. I am wondering if there is:

• spanmetrics, but for entire traces, or
• some way to diff the consume/produce spans seen below, or
• maybe just to blanket insert a new span that wraps the entire trace
• anything I can do at the collector level to improve the situation
