Unable to connect to locally running MCP server

I'm running an MCP server (as fastAPI) locally. (Not using mcpo yet). I'm running OWUI as a docker container. From the UI, I'm unable to add my MCP server as a tool server. It keeps failing with "Failed to connect". Any ideas on what I might be missing?

Open-WebUI cannot talk directly to the MCP Server. You need to include the MCP Server in the MCP to OpenAI proxy, which effectively wraps the stdio into server side events.
