Tool for editors to check cited DOIs exist

Background

• ongoing discussions on social media about papers being cited with full DOI links but that don't exist and whether editors should have realised this before publication - potential damage to reputation when this slips through.
• general concerns raised about AI being used to generate papers and how it 'makes up references'.

So - would a 'bibliography doi checker' be useful for editors?

I was thinking of a page where you could paste in the bibliography from a submission and it would extract all the DOI from it, and look up each URL and grab the metadata, and then show you that side by side with the item from the bibliography. The human editor would do the checking, but the tool would grab all the data and present it in an easy to review format.
