[FEATURE] Add support for node middleware

Ideally we'd like to support the Node middleware.
Right now, it causes issues with some dynamic require of the manifest.

Corresponding tests have been disabled in the experimental app, see #614, we should re-enable them when Node mw is supported

Once supported, we will need to update the docs
