Backup and restore through the host's data disk contents?

Hi. I see a lot of documentation about Snapshots and Remote-backed Storage as ways to protect against data loss. Are these the only supported methods? Or is simply backing up the host's data disk supported? I haven't found any documentation on this one way or the other. Thank you.
