Tag this as higher does nothing it seems to the user

We choose "tag this as higher".
But on the map the lines don't change.
It is just like we picked "tag this as lower."
Sure, maybe in the info panel something changes.
But the map stays the same.

I can reproduce this behavior.

Issue description

When resolving the situation “House crosses service road” and selecting “tag this as higher”, there is no visible change on the map. The rendered result looks identical to choosing “tag this as lower”, even though some tag values may change in the information panel.

Why this is a problem

From a user perspective, iD is a visual editor, and actions like this should provide immediate visual feedback. When both choices result in the same map appearance, it’s unclear whether the intended action was applied correctly, which can be confusing and reduce confidence in the tool.

Expected behavior

Selecting “tag this as higher” should result in a clear visual difference compared to “tag this as lower”, so users can immediately confirm their choice on the map.

Happy to look further into how this could be improved if this aligns with maintainers’ expectations otherwise i can go with another idea also.

It would help if you showed how you image this would work in the Map style. Do we have other part in the map that use a layer concept in this way? Layering data in a map is quite hard…

Thanks for the clarification — that makes sense.

What I had in mind is not true layering or z-index changes, but rather a visual distinction using existing map styling patterns. I agree that real layering in a 2D map is difficult and probably not desirable here.

Direction I’m imagining

When resolving “House crosses service road” and selecting “tag this as higher”, the map could provide immediate visual feedback by reusing established conventions (similar to bridges / tunnels), for example:

• Applying a clearer casing or outline to the higher feature
• Ensuring the crossing visually matches how other “higher” features are already represented elsewhere in the map style

The goal wouldn’t be perfect elevation representation, but simply to make the result visibly different from choosing “tag this as lower”, so users can confirm their choice at a glance.

I’m not aware of a direct equivalent elsewhere in the map yet, so I see this mainly as a feedback indicator, not a general-purpose layering system. If there’s an existing pattern I should align with, I’d be happy to adapt to that.
