Traffic Intersection Monitoring System with OpenVINO

Hi Everyone!

I’m Saumil Patel, a final-year student with over 1 year of experience in Machine Learning and Computer Vision. I have hands-on experience with object detection models like Faster R-CNN, YOLOv5, and YOLOv8, and I’m excited to get started with open-source contributions. I’m particularly interested in the Traffic Intersection Monitoring System with OpenVINO for Google Summer of Code 2025.

I have a question regarding the type of model and framework that would be required for this project. Specifically, I’d love to understand:

• What object detection models are most suited for traffic monitoring in this case?
• Should we use a specific framework or library with OpenVINO for optimization, or is it flexible with most ML models?
• Does this project require using only Qt in C++, or would PyQt5 be a suitable alternative?

Hi Saumil, thanks for your questions, please see my comments here:

• What object detection models are most suited for traffic monitoring in this case?
  In this case, we are going to use YOLOv6s and quantize the model to int8 to improve latency. Other models, such as YOLOv8 or YOLOv11, are also encouraged in this project, but additional effort may be required to enable them to run efficiently upon deployment.
• Should we use a specific framework or library with OpenVINO for optimization, or is it flexible with most ML models?
  No specific framework required, OpenVINO is flexible with most ML models, this is an example with a dummy input:

    import openvino as ov
    import numpy as np
    core = ov.Core()
    model = "yolov5s.onnx"
    dev = "CPU"
    compiled_model = core.compile_model(model=model, device_name=dev)
    example_input = np.ones((1,3,448,768), dtype=np.float32) 
    result_infer = compiled_model(example_input)

  Yes, PyQt5 is suitable. Our goal is to use Qt to build a GUI for displaying the detection results, and both Qt C++ and PyQt are fine.
