Could you please let me know if the board CH32X035F8U6-EVT-R0 is supported?

I already bought one and would like to test a blink example with the arduino core.

The CH32X035 is supported, albeit the G8Ux variant and not your F8U6 variant. Note that this is quite common for the CH32 core. For the popular V003 only the F4 variant is included, but it can be used for all other variants without too many issues. In general you should be able to compile and flash your chip and the basic features should work. The biggest difference is the number of GPIO pins.

(BTW. To improve support you can copy the G8U variant and make changes to better fit your chip. My X033 variant wasn't supported either but I wanted to use regular pin numbers in logical order. In PR #171 you can see the files I used to add a new variant.)

Since you already have a board, I suggest you just give it a try. If you run into problems feel free to add a comment to this issue. Although I don't have the X035 in my collection, I do have the X033, so perhaps I can help. I know there are other people that have used this core on the X035, but I don't know how active they are.

P.S. make sure to install the v1.0.4 and update it with the latest code of the master branch. If you forget that, you may run into many issues.

Thank you for your detailed feedback. As I am new to this, I would prefer to start with a board that is already fully supported.

Could you please confirm if you are referring to the CH32X035G8U6-EVT board or the CH32X035G8U6 board?

I have looked through the project files and found the variant definition for the CH32X035G8U:

variants/CH32X035/CH32X035G8U/variant_CH32X035G8U.cpp

However, a specific file for the ...G8U6 version does not seem to be present. Should I assume that the CH32X035G8U6 chip on the boards is supported by the existing CH32X035G8U variant?

Yes. Most of the available board variants use partial names. I assume it is because these board definitions aught to support different sub-variants, eg. different package but identical pins. Unfortunately I don't have any X035 in my collection, so I can't join you in your experiments.

Please be aware that the level of support of all these CH32 Arduino cores may not be what you are used to from your other Arduino's (eg. Atmel or ESP32). The support offered by WCH employees for their Arduino core was quite limited in the past, After the initial release WCH personnel often seemed to do this in their spare time and response on community contributions is missing most of the time. As a result not all chip features are fully supported and often it's up to ourselves to do the development.
Since many contributors seemed to have moved on, I hope the people remaining are willing to hang on to get things done...
