The /tmp folder is located in RAM. Apparently, 512 MB isn't enough.
Therefore, it's a good idea to unload all unnecessary services from RAM first! See the list of services in the folder: /etc/init.d/

I couldn't flash the firmware either, not even with xmir, as it gave me the exact same "firmware not found" error. I stopped all running services, but even then only about 14 MB of free RAM remained once the firmware file was copied into /tmp. Since /tmp is mounted as tmpfs, the 140 MB firmware image consumed RAM immediately, which made flashing through SSH unreliable.

My main goal was to downgrade to the miwifi_cb0401v2_R03A04-FOTA_firmware_3f953_3.0.34_INT_ispver-3.0.3.bin version. Of course, the web UI updater blocked this, saying I couldn't install an older version.

To bypass this, I used SSH to spoof the current software version so the router would think I'm installing a newer one. After doing this, the standard web UI update worked flawlessly. I just did a factory reset afterwards, and the router is good to go.

Here are the commands I used via SSH:

umount /usr/share/xiaoqiang/xiaoqiang_version
cp /usr/share/xiaoqiang/xiaoqiang_version /tmp/fake_version
sed -i "s/option ROM '.*/option ROM '0.0.1'/g" /tmp/fake_version
mount --bind /tmp/fake_version /usr/share/xiaoqiang/xiaoqiang_version
grep "option ROM" /usr/share/xiaoqiang/xiaoqiang_version
If the output of the last command shows option ROM '0.0.1', you did it right! Just go to the web interface and upload your firmware file.
