Upgrade steps for 4.x to 5.x

We have an existing deployment based on 4.x. We are struggling to upgrade to 5.x without breaking anything. Looks like almost everything is getting deleted and created again. Is there documentation on how the upgrade to 5.x should be done without the cluster getting replaced?

The short answer is that there is not an upgrade path from 4.x to 5.x.

There is also no upgrade path from 5.0.x and 5.1.x to 5.2.x or 5.3.x.
