How the points and badges system works

I’m new to open source and wanted to understand how the points and badges system works in the gssoc.
I wanted to contribute in gssoc 25.

Points are given by the project admins like following

• Beginner: 20 points
• Intermediate: 30 points
• Advanced: 40 points
  Badges may be given when you reach certain milestones.

So, what’s this GSSoC points and badges thing all about?
