OpenRiak Release Update - Riak KV 3.4.0

The OpenRiak Riak KV 3.4.0 release is available. For details see the release notes.

As part of this release an updated documentation set is available - OpenRiak QuickDocs. QuickDocs is focused on providing up-to-date and accurate documentation, prioritised on current best practice for operating Riak; with minimal coverage of legacy features and previous Riak versions.

As described in the release notes, the major features added as part of the release are:

• A new Query API that offers improved support for conjunction queries;
• An extension to conditional PUT logic to have token-based consensus on conditional checks.

The 3.4.0 release can be run with OTP 24 or OTP 26, but has been optimised to work with OTP 26. Throughput improvements of between 5% and 15% may be expected when running Riak 3.4.0 on OTP 26, depending on the features used. The focus for optimisations has been on the efficiency of the leveled backend, and the HTTP API.

As well as performance improvements, the non-functional scope of the release has targeted improvements in the speed of recovery from major failure events: so that clusters can manage both failure and recovery under heavy load conditions - as previously discussed at Code BEAM Americas 2025.

Migration to Riak 3.4.0 on OTP 26 should be possible from any Riak version running on OTP 24 using a rolling upgrade.

There is further information on deploying Riak 3.4.0 available within QuickDocs. When building from source, a cmake version >= 3.21 is now required to compile the snappy compression within eleveldb.
