Contribution: Is there a high level architecture documentation for this extension?

I am thinking of contributing to the project but do not know where to start. I have looked at the guidelines for this here but it does not help much in telling where to start. I will myself try to dig deeper this weekend so thought of asking If there is any head start documentation I can get?
