btrfs and overlay both not working on newer openshift

On openshift 4.11 I could run baggageclaim in btrfs. I postponed updating the cluster, now jumping to 4.17. Everything works, except I can only use baggageclaim drive naive. I understand that on openshift RIP btrfs because of this , but what about overlay?

I'd really like to avoid using naive. baggageclaim logs, even in debug don't say anything, only that it failed to create the volume asynchronously, with "invalid argument".

How can I troubleshoot this further? I'm on helm chart 17.4.0.
