Seeking a Robust Solution for Switching Between Podman and Docker in Local and Remote Environments

I use Podman locally and Docker on a remote machine. Currently, I handle this difference by creating a fake command in my local profile that maps docker commands to podman:

$ cat opt/bin/podman 
#!/bin/bash
exec docker "$@"

Is there a more robust or standardized way to switch between Docker and Podman in such environments?
