Admin logins failing

Hi

I have a development Etherpad instance that has been upgraded from v2.5.0 to v2.5.3 and the admin logins have stopped working, at the /admin/login URL I have the login form but all attempts to login return a white on red "Login failed" box at the top right of the screen.

I have tried setting the password to something very simple in /home/etherpad/sites/etherpad/settings.json:

But nothing works, the instance is run via a systemd unit file at /etc/systemd/system/etherpad.service containing:

The instance is using a MariaDB database, I have been restarting the systemd service after editing the settings.json file.

Does anyone have any suggestions regarding how to debug and/or fix this?
