How to include unnumbered children without resetting the numbering count?

I am trying to configure the TOC so that it numbers pages at the root level, but does not number child pages. When I try to do this, the numbering after the child page resets to 1:

Per file I specify in the frontmatter its behaviour:

include the offset and you are done :) tested it for you locally

I wasn't able to replicate your fix by using offset... it just seemed to change the nesting level of the number displayed.

However, your suggestion led me to finding the option numbering: headings: start: which can be used to override the value for a particular page.

Here is the configuration which worked for me:

which results in the following numbering:

(I don't like the idea of hardcoding the section number in the page's frontmatter, but at least it is a temporary workaround.)
