Background:
Engrampa 1.26.2 in LM MATE 22.x or Ubuntu MATE 24.04.x got a serious bug in opening password protected 7z files.
mate-desktop/engrampa#510
Ideally a bug fix release, perhaps in the form of 1.26.3 shall release and get picked up by Ubuntu repository. Unfortunately this is not going to happen in any time soon. The MATE team seems to get some serious software building infrastructure issue and be stuck, with no information on when will that get fixed.
Potential Workaround:
Some people succeeded in compiling and installing Engrampa 1.28.2 into Ubuntu MATE 24.04mate-desktop/engrampa#524That means it is possible for Linux Mint to ship something similar if Mint team is willing to.Since 23 July 2025, there is now a 1.26.2-5 packaged for Ubuntu "questing" (Ubuntu 25.10) with the bug fix patched in downstream.
https://packages.ubuntu.com/questing/engrampa https://changelogs.ubuntu.com/changelogs/pool/universe/e/engrampa/engrampa_1.26.2-5/changelog
It is available in Debian Sid as well.
New Event:
In the latest Firefox related bug linuxmint/cinnamon#12994 @mtwebster opened the window of backporting a newer version of xdg-desktop-portal into LM 22.2, in order to fix the Firefox system theme dark mode pick up. That means it is possible to cherry-pick some software package and ship them with a newer version.
Therefore:
How about we ship Engrampa
1.28.21.26.2-5 in LM 22.2 too?Beta Was this translation helpful? Give feedback.
