Grouping filetypes

Taking this screenshot from another issue here.
I would like to have filetypes grouping like in Windows or KDE (screenshot). This is not about sorting, but grouping files like in the screenshot.

Simple answer, use list view instead of icon view.

Icon view is a "secondary view option" with no benefits over list view. Also you can resize folders/files in list view, if you need bigger thumbs.

Plus cross checking file type markers is a great security functon too, any shadealy named files would get flagged in a manner of speaking, but give users the ability to use or fix them if desired. I just realized that bit 3 minutes ago when I was thinking about this some more.

One of the issues here is that UNIX/Linux doesn't use file extensions, the way PC-DOS/Windows does. Yes, you can put periods in filenames, but the result is still not a file extension.

Under Windows, a file with an extension of .PDF would be grouped with the other files ending in .PDF, even if it were actually a JPG. Ideally on Linux, you would want PDF files to be in one group and JPG's to be in another, regardless of whether there was no period in the file name, or it ended in .PDF, or ended in .JPG. Granted, it might be odd to see a filename ending in .PDF among the JPEG files, but if it's actually a JPEG image file, you want it grouped with the other such files.

I hope this is clear. I simply mean that grouping files by type is far more complex under Linux than under Windows.

Yes, its true. Still, I would be happy with the basics; group the ones with extensions and the ones without them get grouped in "no extension". Image and video files as well as office suite files generally have extensions. And the system could maybe also rely on mime types for the no-extension files.

It should be the reverse: for binary types use MIME types; if the type is plaintext (all binary types have magic numbers) then use the file extension.

MIME ah so that is what "meta data type" is called, i't fix those mentions right away.
