Big fan and long time user of Cinnamon - it just works, 99% of the time.
However, I miss the ability of my Macbook Pro to clean up my desktop while leaving my organized messes alone. On Mac, I can disable auto-arrange and put icons wherever I like on my desktop, but then with just a right-click and "Clean up", my icons get cleaned up to align to a grid. Alternatively, I can organize everything by right-click and "Clean up by->" Name, Kind, Date Modified, Date Created, Size or Tags.
On Cinnamon, it seems like a pretty much either or proposition using right-click settings and picking auto-arrange, etc. The closest workaround I have come up with is to pick my direction and sort options, then disable auto-arrange. Then when things get messy on the desktop, I can nuke it by clicking auto-arrange and putting the things I care about back the way I want them. Ew, but not horrible.
My suggestion is to add a menu item to the context menu that pops up when you right click the desktop that says "Arrange Items" and another that says "Arrange Items by->" and that has Name, Type, Modified, Size, etc. Leaving the options in settings as the default to arrange by.
