A new branding (design) change would be amazing. Would love to see this happen. ❤️ |

What exactly are you looking to change? Logo? Theme? Wallpapers? And what ideas do you have in mind exactly? |

Good luck with this, Egor. You seem to have a well-put together argument here (and I recently met someone who really sold Linux to me :) |

I think Linux Mint, the best OS in the world, does not deserve a template for their website design! |

think of all things what I like the most about the current Mint branding is their website, haven't seen a distro with a better one yet, this doesn't mean it can't be improved but personally don't see the need for a radical change. Icons , themes, colors, typography, that's where I see an important contribution could be made. I'm a bit concerned about the recent changes to the mint themes and maybe some professional aid could help to achieve better implementations Maybe even coming up with a HIG website like GNOME has to help developers comply with the design patterns and goals of the Linux Mint project |

@Zmaznevegor Can you show us some of your previous work? |

Nice to hear your perspective even though it seem to be a poor judgement at the very least cause there was not a single stock photo used with fully custom 3Ds. In any case, "to each their own" and I don't expect to get constructive criticism from every community member. I think that our experience, work and awards speak for itself. |

@Zmaznevegor Tbh, it was only in september 21 that the website had a revamp https://blog.linuxmint.com/?m=202110 btw, I really like your portfolio, it's certainly eye catching. |

I think Mint-Y's application icons need to change new style. Mint-Y also revamped at 21.1 with Papirus elements. But, Application icons still Moka. So, I redesigned some icons for Mint-Y. Is it good? |

While it's great to see this offer (I, for one, like the portfolio, even though I might understand how a design language so close to Windows's Fluent might not be others' cup of tea), the Mint website itself has been redesigned very recently and I don't expect a change to be accepted very soon. Themes are also being incrementally updated (e.g check out the release notes for Vera and Victoria, sections "Look and feel") and I assume the devs are quite invested in the bottom-up process as it is now. Victoria will add (experimental) support for blur/bump maps in themes which would give a lot more freedom to design looks like the ones in your portfolio. Other than that, I'm not sure what will come next. |

This is not how it works. We're not designing Electron, or mobile apps. We're designing GTK. |

I very much appreciate that you've put time into the Lm design. We need it. However, the problem is that distro restyling is very hard, and the Lm apps need to support themes. The design must be constrained by GTK CSS. |

wow long thread So I am left with a washed out cinnamon , KDE that doesn't look good at all(the themes break it), and a usable but very grey desktop (gnome). All themes are inconsistent and sometimes unusable like that popular neon purple pink theme for gnome and kde, right now I have been looking for better things but no avail changing the os is not what i want (apparently most people in the Linux community like that) The design upgrade is true need to make the Linux mint ecosystem grow its user base and trust me it will. Also a design upgrade on the software store is needed, all apps looked washed out and the spacing is odd |

@Zmaznevegor would you and your team still be willing to work on this if it got devs attention back? |

@Secret-chest Ironically I made an almost identical logo today without even seeing yours. Just gonna share it here: |

I guess, most users don't care about a new branding or theming, because such topics are not common, public discussions. Apple or Microsoft decide by themselves what's good or bad for their OS and don't care if end-users like our dislike their branding. Now, since the request of this thread is unique, the response on such a proposal makes users wonder. Everyone has a different level of idea and understanding about branding, so the answers will be all other than coherent The initiative to create a new branding is awesome and should be accepted with open arms. A lot would also happen during the development phases, so I'd not start to criticize any generous and passionate offers this early so to undermine any genuine interest to innovate Mint. I hope this initiative can find much more acclaim. |

Cinnamon only exists today because GNOME 3 went through a complete UI redesign, and LM wanted to stay traditional. That's the space LM occupies among Linux distros: classic, traditional, consistent, familiar, predictable and usable. Slight improvements here and there are welcome, but a complete redesign of Cinnamon would disappoint me. I feel like it goes against LM's philosophy. It goes against the reason why Cinnamon exists in the first place. That being said, I don't like LM's logo. It reminds me of a teenager hand gesture, something like 🤟. I love Cinnamon's logo, though. |

I first started with Linux and LM in 2019. I had two issue with LM Cinnamon back then. One was that it was old and ugly design out of the box. I did reinstall LM at the beginning of the year, and some other distros (Zorin OS, Ubuntu), since I was not happy with the design of Cinnamon. At the very end it drove me back to LM, since it is a very good distro. But the design sucks. I did some modifications, different theme, different icon, panel modifications, different start menu. I also tried to change the boot logo with the cinnamon symbolic, but I failed. Anyhow, I wish LM would come out of the box a bit nicer, a bit more polish, a bit more modern. If it would be fancy out of the box, I would install it to my grandmas PC too. Okay lol, let's be honest, at least I would install it on my father's and friends PC if it would come a bit more fancy out of the box. All this customizing is too much to set it up on multiple PCs, and even worse. If the next big update rolls out their might several crushes on all the PCs where I did change the boot logo and stuff. I don't want that mesh, so that's why I can not recommend LM to any of my friends or family. I really appreciate ever step like this to push cinnamon into 21st century. I am really suprised that quite some people here on github like the actual design. Maybe it would be a good idea to be able to set up the design with the start screen after installation. Choose the legacy design or the modern design... Other than that, a GNOME or KDE spin off might be an idea... |

The design in the proposal is fine, but it should be another option, not replace anything, ideally another DE. It looks like GNOME with a dock. Also, that floating panel at the top is just a fad that harms the desktop. It takes up more space, doesn't use Fitts' law, and I don't know what happens when a window is maximised. |

Lots of people talk but miss to show their ideas: it's hard to figure out what others think, better we submit mockups. What's a mockup? To show an idea, NOT a final product Here some of my ideas: |

I really like the new design, but I think implementing it would be too much work that the Mint team just won't be able to do. Even Ubuntu's implementation of its design is flawed, and that's run by a corporation with a lot of Enterprise money, not to mention Gnome being the most funded desktop environment. Sure, there are distros out there that nailed the visual aspects, but those are usually much buggier and less reliable. I think the reason Mint looks kinda boring is because more effort goes into making everything work. And this is what we all appreciate about it. |

Our latest attempt at pushing the initiative. During our last updated many users liked the way it looked but were not sure if the system would be scalable or whether the proposed brand foundation is really consistent. That's why we decided to wrap everything as a single visual case to highlight how we see the future of the brand if our initiative is adopted. See case here: https://www.behance.net/gallery/232107079/Linux-Mint |

As an old Linux desktop user and co-founder of Klad, a design studio focused on branding and UI/UX, I appreciate Linux Mint's commitment to user-friendliness. The current branding resonates with the existing audience, underlining its utilitarian approach, but a refreshing rebrand could extend its appeal to a broader audience and can work as a good foundation for the future design of the distro.
To contribute to this project we adore, we propose a free and open visual brand update for Linux Mint. This would entail not only a systematic overhaul of the brand visuals, but also an update to the website design, giving it a fresh look and audience appeal. Our entire design process, from concept to finalization, would be openly shared and accessible.
We realize such an initiative would be a significant commitment, likely exceeding eight weeks of dedicated team effort. As passionate as we are, we hope our work wouldn't be wasted. Therefore, we want to carry this initiative with the community and managing team support. We understand that a lot of LM followers are satisfied with the current materials but we believe that it might be one of the things that keeps distro from the broader appeal and that in the worst case scenario it will at the very least help the project systematize its design assets.
TLDR:
⭐️ UPD: we came up with a redesign concept, you can learn more about it here.
⭐️⭐️ UPD2: entire visual case is now here
