There is already the "Open with..." option if you right-click on a file icon, with a drop-down list of all possible applications. There is also the Preferred Applications module in the System Settings, where you can set the defai;t Web browser, mail client, text editor., and so forth. How would what you are proposing be different? |

For the standard applications, there are only limited applications to choose from for each category, for Internet or multimedia and so on. But I can't manually select an application that is installed in the /opt folder, for example. It would be great if there is an option for this in the future without achieving this through great difficulty. Windows, for example, has had this feature for ages and it is very convenient. When opening a file, you will be asked with which application you want to open it, but you also have the option to manually search for an application on the hard drive and then select it.
