Review the default wallpaper policy

Hi!

I believe (maybe i'm wrong) that many users shy away from trying Mint just because of the default wallpapers.
Maybe if Mint shipped with more appealing wallpapers, more people would try it (and increase the user base).

I'm curious where you see those opinions - from all the feedback we've ever seen the new wallpaper selections in each release are one of the highlights.

I don't have a specific instance to show, maybe i'll find it later.
But, two sites i know i already seen these opinions are: omgubuntu.co.uk and youtube (in videos about distro comparison).
I do agree that it's a rather childish complaint to make, because of course you can change the wallpaper and of course almost no one will keep the default one.
However, it is a criticism i've seen a lot more than it makes any sense to see because of the reasons i already enumerated and it's an 'easy fix'.

Apparently i'm not the one with the feeling that Mint's appearence is not perceived as 'good looking'.

I suspect the objection is simply to the Mint logo wallpapers and is probably made by someone who failed to see the gorgeous photographs provided with each release.

To the organisation change I have a suggestion. I agree with grouping based on theme, but it doesn't make sense to have a single one. I think there should be many themes from the start (Abstract, Plants, Landscapes, Cities, Objects etc.), all corresponding to a single directory. Then each mint-wallpapers package could create subdirectories in each of these, for instance /usr/share/backgrounds/landscapes/zara. This would allow each release to add to the existing collections.

Default wallpapers are a good "default".
Those who like wallpapers will change wallpapers anyways.

The only issue with Mint's wallpapers is, they aren't organized in daylight categories: day and night.
Eg. Bright wallpapers by night hurt eyes and dark wallpapers by day are less vivid than their brighter counterpart.

I've downloaded and adapted a variety of seasonal vistas that I change with the seasons. I'd show a few, except they are most likely under copyright. But anyone has to admit that the photography of the Mint wallpapers is stunning.
