What is "contention window" here? Are they trying to say the time to wait is a random number between 1 and a max value constant named "contention window"?

"The amount of slot times to wait is randomly picked from a contention window (CW)"
What is "contention window" here? Are they trying to say the time to wait is a random number between 1 and a max value constant named "contention window"?
