esp32 emails with gmail

I'm trying to send an email from an esp32 using https://randomnerdtutorials.com/micropython-send-emails-esp32-esp826/ but it fails with

File "umail.py", line 70, in login
AssertionError: auth error 535, ['5.7.8 Username and Password not accepted. For more information, go to', '5.7.8  https://support.google.com/mail/?p=BadCredentials d2e1a72fcca58-7364ef011c1sm1840367b3a.111 - gsmtp']

which makes me think maybe that 16 digit app passwords are no longer functional with google accounts? Just wondering if anybody else has tried Sara's 'how to' this year & had any success?

Hi,
I use this code and it works perfectly.
I had a lot of trouble getting the azpplication password for gmail.
But once you have it, everything works as described in the article

Reading through that article I see port 465 is used. I have 5 systems using umail and Gmail but use port 587.

I use:

smtp = umail.SMTP('smtp.gmail.com', 465, ssl=True) # Gmail's SSL port

Rookie error! I mistakenly assumed the app_password was global for my google account but it's specific to the esp32 email address. Once I created it in the correct chrome profile things have improved greatly.
