Show label if input has value

I have a custom Input component that shows a label if the input has a value or is focused. However, when using react-hook-form to control the input, the value prop isn't present initially. Any suggestions for what to do here?

Current solution I have is passing watch("field") as the value prop, but this is super clunky.
