Issues with cython when attempting installation, versions 4.4.2/4.4.3

Hello,
I am working on a project requiring the use of LDMS to collect some data. I ran into some issues with the previous installation on LDMS that was on the machine I am working on. In an attempt to reinstall, I am hitting a wall with some of the Cython code in ldms.pyx. For reference, I am on an Intel machine running Ubuntu 24.04 LTS.

I attempted to "start fresh" as best as I could by removing anything LDMS related from my ~/Source directory. I then followed the quick start guide in the wiki to a tee. I ensured that all listed dependencies are installed. I have Python 3.12.9 installed (not sure how much the Python version matters here). I cloned and followed all steps as listed.

When I run make, however, the following Cython error appears (slightly modified output):

I have checked to ensure that Cython is installed on the machine. I am not too knowledgeable with how to proceed or debug this issue, so any assistance would be greatly appreciated. I can provide any more information as needed. Thanks!

What version of ldms are your building? Cython changed how the GIL lock was taken and how except/noexcept work. We have a 24.04 build test in our git pipeline so top of tree should work.

Sorry for the delayed response. I already had the latest version of Cython installed, it seems (3.1.2?). I tried again at top of the tree and the make / make install worked. Thanks for the help!

I believe this is a known bug with the currently packaged version of Cython with Ubuntu 24. You can resolve this by installing the newest Cython using a virtual environment and adjusting your libraries. Another alternative is uninstalling Cython with pip, upgrading, and reinstalling with the --break-system-packages parameter.
