I'm new to contributing to big repositories --- is there any good starting points that I could help wth?

You can find our contributing guide here: https://palletsprojects.com/contributing/ You won't find much to work on in Flask itself. The front page of the guide provides many ideas, including where to contribute:

Besides the core Pallets projects, there is an entire ecosystem of extensions built on top of them. We also have our own dependencies that we use for our development environment. Improving the ecosystem we're part of is a great way to contribute to Pallets.
