When do I need this firmware?

Background: I am researching what would go into mapping PC USB joysticks to my existing FlySky 10 chanel receivers. In other words I am total noob on these topics.

I stumbled upon this project but am struggling a bit to see if it is actually required for my use case? I assume that the goal of flashing a pre-built unit is to expand the protocols that are available. Is this correct? Does the firmware add anything else?

I am looking at the iRangeX IRX4 Plus and by the documentation on Banggood it seems it already has support for the Flysky AFHDS 2A protocol. Do I need to flash the unit?

Sorry for for such a rudimentary question but I could not find an answer in the docs (or I might have missed it).
