Description
Problem statement
PatternFly's current icon strategy leads to a fragmented user experience and technical inconsistencies across its products.
From a design side, we load a mix of both PF icons and Font Awesome icons into our Figma components file for users to use – the conflicting styles from the different icon sets can look really incohesive in product.
From a development side, icons are being pulled into React as SVGs in our react icon package, and pulled into core as an icon font – the different delivery methods between core and react causes subtle differences in icon sizing and alignment within our components.
Impact statement
Unifying PatternFly's icons will strengthen our brand and elevate the user experience, allowing for more reliable, visually appealing, and easier-to-build applications for our users.
Definition of done
Work with the Brand team to deliver a unified icon experience across PatternFly using the new UI icons – one branded icon set, and one common method for delivering those icons.
Level of effort
2-3 sprints for UXD's part (+ ongoing collaboration with the Brand team as they work to create these icons)
