UI: after having selected a card with children, how can you change your selection to just the children?

double-click handling relies on the fact that a user only clicks on a marked card again to discard it. in this case, however, it'd be desirable to change the selection with a single click.
it'd be okay if clicking anywhere but on a card would unmark all cards.
