Does payloadcms support nested select?

For example, I want to get the ID of the author:

   const document = await payload.findByID({
      collection: 'novels', // replace with your collection name
      id,
      select: {
        author: { // Type '{ id: true; }' is not assignable to type 'boolean | undefined'.ts(2322)
          id: true,
        },
      },
    })

But this does not work, I had to get the whole author and extract the id.

According to the docs and code:

export type SelectIncludeType = {
    [k: string]: SelectIncludeType | true;
};

It should have worked?

Edited: You can set depth: 0 to get only the ID of the related document, and populate to return only specific fields. But the nature of this select option is still puzzling (it should supported nested selection, but it doesn't)?
