One-Shot Learning (OSL) is a machine learning paradigm where a model learns to recognize or classify new objects, concepts, or patterns from just a single example (or very few examples). Unlike traditional supervised learning that requires hundreds or thousands of labeled examples per class, one-shot learning mimics human-like learning—the ability to generalize from minimal data.
The core idea is simple:
- The model is shown one (or very few) example(s) of a new class
- The model must recognize future instances of that class
- Learning happens through comparison and similarity measurement rather than traditional gradient descent on large datasets
One-shot learning is particularly well-suited for problems involving rare events, personalization, rapid adaptation, and scenarios where data collection is expensive or impractical.
A category or label that groups similar objects, concepts, or patterns together. For example, in image recognition, "cat", "dog", and "bird" are different classes. In one-shot learning, the model must learn to recognize new classes from just one or a few examples, unlike traditional machine learning which requires many examples per class.
