Tests failing in Gitlab CI/CD Environment

Basic tests which work fine in dev are failing within CI/CD and I'm at a loss to work out what's going on.

Does anyone have any ideas or thoughts?

This is on Debian:latest running under GitLab (self hosted / community) on Docker

Partially answering my own question, the tests succeed if ioncube loader is disabled so it looks like an interaction between pest and ioncube loader - none of the test files are encoded (and in fact in this test project nothing is encoded)
