Install of PIE

The https://www.php.net/downloads.php was updated but I think PIE is not yet shipped with PHP itself.

While I think it would be great if I install PHP via brew that PIE is part of it. We at current state maybe can just extend the downloads page.

correct, I'd be hesitant to ship PIE itself in with PHP, but would be open to a script to fetch the latest PIE version though perhaps. Main reason being, IMO we can iterate quicker if we are not tied to PHP releases, and that is a benefit of decoupling. However, on the flipside it may indeed hamper adoption.

PECL is not yet officially even deprecated, so yes, it continues to be bundled (although there is a draft RFC to officially deprecate it).

Yeah I hadn't noticed the new download page yet, I'll have a look, but it seems like a good idea to add PIE in there :)

PIE and COMPOSER should be listed added there :)

You are right about the release cycle. That sure better at current state, but adding it to the download page is I think great way.

For MAC I used:

wget https://github.com/php/pie/releases/download/1.1.0/pie.phar # not sure if wget is availabe by default
chmod +x pie.phar
sudo mv pie.phar /usr/local/bin/pie

A installer script like FrankenPHP has would be nice.

Could not yet give the extension installer a try as most extension seems not compatible with 8.5 because of /private/tmp/pear/temp/redis/common.h:14:10: fatal error: 'ext/standard/php_smart_string.h' file not found

My recommendation for the (automated) installation would be (using gh CLI):

gh release --repo php/pie download --pattern pie.phar
gh attestation verify --repo php/pie pie.phar

I personally would not force that they have a need to install github cli installed.

Better even would be to push the release to php.net server where its downloaded from.
