Using Pico's color variables in SCSS

I would like to use the SCSS darken() function to manipulate --pico-primary-background. However, I can't figure out how to get the variable exposed and usable in SCSS. Is this documented somewhere? If not, I'd love to know how to do this and to contribute a change in the documentation.
