As you've mentioned, the overlay is the Rect Model
const backgroundOverlay = editor.board.background.overlay;

I've tried to setAttrs for gradient on canvas background.
Here is that code:

editor.board.background.overlay.setAttrs(
      {fill: "transparent",
      fillLinearGradientColorStops: [0, "red", .5, "green", 1, "blue"],
      fillLinearGradientStartPoint: { x: 0, y: 0 },
      fillLinearGradientEndPoint: { x: 90, y: 50 }}
)

I've also tried with setAttr to set each property one-by-one, but it didn't work. What did I miss??

Now I get it, first we need to do fill = null so that the gradient would able to work.

I encountered the problem of removing the background image dynamically, just a snippet for those, who's going to waste time on that and searches for the answer in docs: editor.board.background.image.delete()
