Catching a bad gzip file with BadGzipFile

A gzip file with bad content can be caught with:

import gzip
with gzip.open(infile, 'r') as g:
    try:
        g.read(1)
    except gzip.BadGzipFile:
        print('Not a valid gzip file') 

Is this the equivalent in smart_open?

from smart_open import open as sopen
with sopen(infile, 'rb') as g:
    try:
        g.read(1)
    except:
        print('Not a valid gzip file.')
