I did not have an initial idea for this project but I have come to terms with an idea that I think may work. I want to do a website all about dogs - information on breeds, fun facts, general dos and donts, along with an image of a dog's face and body. The images will hopefully have a feature to hover over them and the name (scientific and regular) will show up. Once clicked further information about the health and safety (ear infection prevention or the pads of dog's feet in the snow) will be there along with any other helpful links/information. Tons of information about adopting dogs and local rescues/petsmarts/petcos for supplies. What I need are the skills to build a website - I am hoping this tutorial is easy and helpful enough to make it possible to take the simple concepts we learned and make it into my own vision.

This sounds great, Aliyah! You can totally get the "hover" effect using the :hover pseudoclass (explained in the css-selectors tutorial; there are also fancier tricks you can find on google), though you'd ideally have a fallback for phones and tablets, which don't have a hover action. We'll discuss next week whether these responsive-design fallbacks are baseline or aspirational.

One big thing to think about – and the main reason I'm replying is so everyone in the class can think about this, too – is setting priorities to keep the scope of the project manageable. It would be amazing to have all this information on your website! But even gathering the material can take a lot of time, and then there's deploying it all, in the various places. If you had to choose some aspects of your site plan to definitely include, and some to reserve for stretch goals, which aspects would you prioritize? Would it work to hide some of the navigation for pages that don't exist yet, and then reveal them only when/if the content is ready?

For my website, I want to talk a bit about the trips that I have taken, and upcoming trip(s) that I will take to Yakama WA, and what I've been learning as a result of it. I'd also like to make this website a way to display the work I've done in this class, as both previous projects also relate to this place and the people there. I want to have a main landing page, and then three other pages: 1) discusses the trips I went on and the organization that I was able to work alongside, lots of pictures and descriptions here 2) the digital media projects with my current thoughts about the place there, and things that came to mind because of the people there and 3) as I'm going to be preparing for (and coming back from) a mission trip over spring break, I will put a bit of a reflection/devotional here. I thought I could do more of a blog on this page, but after going through the tutorial, I realize that this would be difficult, so it may just be texts arranged well.

As for assets, I'll be using my projects, and my pictures, primarily, and I'm not quite sure if I'll need outside assets just yet.

For my website, I would like to talk about the different coffee shops in Pittsburgh in the different neighborhoods. My main page will just have the words Coffee Shops in Pittsburgh with a toggle menu on the left. There will also be an option to take a quiz to see which coffee shop best suits you. This quiz will automatically show up if you scroll down past the main screen. On the toggle menu, there will be a list of different neighborhoods and then depending on which neighborhood you click it brings up another screen. This screen will have pictures of all of the different coffee shops laid out in that particular area. If you hover over the picture, it will give brief details. If you click the picture there will be some more in depth information such as customer reviews, Port Authority buses you can take, and more.

I really like to study off campus, so I thought this would be a fun way to mix in exploration and design through different coffee places.

For my proposal, I plan on showing pictures of different places i've been over the years. The title is probably going to be something like "adventures around the world" I've been to a few places that were not in the U.S. and i think people should be able to see some of these places through pictures if they can't go there in person. I learned a lot of information during these trips, especially in London and Paris, so I wanted to have a text box on that page showing some interesting facts and information on the specific pages for the pictures.

For my website, I want to make it about Bryce Harper and his free agency. The baseball season is only a month away and he still hasn’t singed. There are three main teams who have been in the deal for almost the entire time, the Phillies, Dodgers and Giants. There have also been rumors going around about what each team is offering and why Bryce won’t sign.

I thought it would be fun to make a website to track his movements and what is happening. For the main page I envision a menu bar either on the top or side with the options of: History, Biography, Phillies, Giants, Dodgers. Each page will have carefully planned text to help tell the story.

I will have a picture of Bryce (either real or cartoonish) in the center of the page with the title “Where will Bryce go” or “Where did Bryce go” depending on if he signed yet or not yet. I would like to map a map of the USA behind him with San Fan, LA and Philly highlighted. Each city will have a star users can click on that will take you to the same page, but with a different CSS code to reflect the colors of those teams.

If he has signed, I would like to put a thumbs up or thumbs down pop up on the page as well depending what city you click on.

While I know this will be difficult, it is something that interests me and I think it will be fun to create.

To be honest, I've wanted to be a blogger for a while now. So this project came at a good time for me. I was thinking about setting up a blog that contained travel, fashion, fitness, and advice. As you can see in my layout, I have the four components listed at the top for viewers to click on and access articles. On the side, I have an about me where I will explain who I am and what I hope to accomplish with the website. On the left-hand side, there will be different articles that are the "most popular" that viewers can see straight away. The middle will contain the most recent two articles I've published.

I plan on using my own pictures that I've taken with my camera. As far as I know, I probably will not use any external assets.

Dear Laura,

As I did for Aliyah's post, I'm going to reply publicly here because your proposal raises a possibility that might well affect other people coming after you in the queue.

First, let me say that I'm excited that this class is going to help you get moving on a blog you've been planning for a while! Does that mean that you have ideas for posts ready to go? In planning the assignment, I'd been thinking about a portfolio of existing materials, so doing the web design and also writing a bunch – and taking photographs! – is above and beyond the call of duty.

There are a couple of ways to make a blog work within the scope of this assignment:
You can do a static mock-up of the site, writing (e.g.) about one post for each category and then lorem ipsum text for any additional ones you'd need for layout, giving you a chance to experiment with the kinds of headers and fonts you'd want to see on a live-updating category feed. This would be the most straightforward option from a learning-html+css standpoint, but wouldn't be a "real" blog yet; you'd have to edit the existing files every time you wanted to add a new post, and you couldn't really put something in more than one category without literally copying and pasting it.

You can use Jekyll to create html templates that use "liquid tags" (essentially variables) to automatically pull in content from other files; you just have to add some metadata (e.g. categories) to the top of those files. There's a good tutorial that's linked prominently from that Jekyll documentation page at the start of this bullet, which also shows you how to set up an RSS feed with Jekyll so people can subscribe to your updates (it takes one line! pretty cool). This is a somewhat more advanced kind of web design, so I'm expecting it would count as aspirational, but in some ways it actually makes life a lot simpler, because you can avoid repeating the sidebar or navigation (for example) in every html file.

In the long run, you may find yourself very happy with a Jekyll-based blog; there are plenty of them out there. But if you really do want that "most popular" kind of thing to update in real time, or to easily facilitate comments, you'll probably end up needing a database under your site. WordPress is a good option if you later go that route, but I'm temporarily banning site builders like that for this assignment, because they do most of the design for you. (Jekyll is powerful, but it's a markup framework, like Bootstrap CSS: you still have to tell it which component goes where.)

For my website project I would like to make a portfolio of information and photos from my summer study abroad to Italy last summer. During the trip I created a few journal entries about my trip that I shared with my family, but I never really finished and have a lot of photos sitting in a folder, so I think an online portfolio would be a great way to share my experience and photos. I would like to make a website where the home page is simple with a title and photo of the duomo from Florence. I would also like the top to have a menu bar that brings users to different pages, however I would like the pages to be connected vertically so a user can also just scroll down through each section. I want each section to feature a different city I had the opportunity to visit on the weekends while studying abroad in Florence. For each section I will include the top highlights from the location in a bar on the left and possibly some historic information about the location. I then would like the right side to have a bunch of photos in two sections. One section will be the sights that I visited and the second being the top eats from each location. Some ideas that I’m not sure I will be able to get to but would like to aim for is to use the hover effect for the photos to provide text info on the location and name of the sight or food dish and then also possibly providing links to more information about the history of that sight or for the food section a link to the restaurant if I remember where it is from. I would like to add this information so the site also serves a purpose of suggesting what to do for someone else who may view this and like to visit

For my website I just want it to be about me and my experiences. I didn't really have any inspiration to make anything out of the ordinary so I guess it would be cool to have a website with a (downloadable) link to my resume, along with another box that when clicked would redirect the user to a bio about me and my aspirations. On the main page I want to have other panels that would also redirect (in new tab?) to my various social media platforms including LinkedIn, facebook, instagram, and whatever else employers may want to view. Behind the picture of me at the top maybe a banner in the background as a stretch goal, or as a basic goal maybe just two banners next to the picture of me.

For my website I want to create something for my professional career by creating a website with my work. I want to produce video content for either a tv station or online multimedia group so I essentially want to create a website that has all of my best video work on it. So far I only have a few smaller and lower production value videos, but I'm in the process of working on a few other projects that I would like to incorporate later on. I want the website to look clean and simple, with the landing page being a video that plays automatically and then you scroll up to bring in the next video, and then this will lead you to a few different videos to click on and then finally contact info. As it stands, I might try to fill it with pictures I've taken or other stuff until more of my work gets finished, either way we'll see.

I would like to dedicate my website to the country of Gambia, where my mom's side of the family is from. My last visit was during the summer of 2015, and I still have a decent amount of photos from that trip. I plan on dividing up my website into three sections: the history, the people, and the popular landmarks. The history section will provide an overview of Gambia's history through the present, in addition to current political and economic issues. The next section will discuss the people of Gambia in terms of the various ethnic groups and languages. Finally, I plan to cover popular landmarks and different regions of the country. Gambia is starting to become more well known amongst travelers and tourists so I thought it would be cool to highlight what the country has to offer.

For my website project I wanted to talk about competitive cheerleading. This is a sport that I participated in from the time I was 11 years old, until I was 18. Through this sport, I was able to meet my best friends and experience a variety of different things that I would not have been able to otherwise. My website will highlight what cheerleading is, the certain skills that are performed and how those skills warrant a strong bond between team members and finally my story doing competitive cheer. I want the landing page of my website to include a photo of a stunt and I want the photo to have an effect in when someone first clicks on the page. I want the color scheme of page to be a kind of vibrant blue and white, since these colors are similar to the colors of the uniforms I used to wear. I want to include pictures of my time cheering, as well as, cool skills and stunts that cheerleaders do. I would also like to include videos. For my assets, I do not believe that I need external sources and
and can use the pictures and videos that I have from my time cheering.

For my website, I want to create an online portfolio for myself. It will include artwork and professional experience along with information about myself and my skills. Some page sections would include an "about" section, and a "portfolio" section, as well as a "contact" section with my information. My assets would be all of my original work and photography. I want to keep the design clean and simple with an easy way to navigate through some of my favorite images on the home page, with a more in depth portfolio and about page. I'm sure that I will change up the layout with some trial and error, but for now, this is what I'm thinking.
