Panel Applet button size

Hello,

I am working on a small pomodoro applet. I wish the panel view (defined in fn view) to show the remaining time (or "Pomodoro" if not started yet).

However, I cannot change the button width, so the text is cropped. Can you give pointers about how to achieve this?
