api for determining if a page is currently cached ?

It would be very useful if we could find out if a page is currently cached prior to deciding if we want to send a recache command or not.. considering a GET on an uncached page or a POST can result if a very long operation.. there is no quick and easy way of knowing if a page is currently cached unless I'm missing something
