Who can apply for the pr05 grant?

The pr05 grant is open to early to mid-career coders, developers, or software engineers, interested in professional mentorship and the opportunity to collaborate and learn within a cohort of like-minded peers. We welcome applicants from all backgrounds, regardless of geographical location.

How do I apply for the pr05 Grant?

Information about currently running grants at the Processing Foundation can be found at the following address:

Also consider joining our mailing list to be informed of future opportunities.

What is the selection process for the pr05 grant?

The selection process for the pr05 Program is based on a thorough review of all applications by the Processing Foundation team and a panel of external reviewers. The evaluation is mainly based on project understanding, proposed approach, and relevant experience. After screening of the proposal, a short list of finalists will be invited to a video interview. See this year's timeline for specific dates.

What benefits do grantees receive?

Grant recipients receive a $10,000 USD stipend, mentorship, and public-facing opportunities to showcase their work. They also gain access to the Processing Foundation's network of developers, artists, designers, activists, educators, engineers, researchers, and collectives to collaborate and exchange during and after the completion of their project.

How long is the pr05 Program?

The pr05 Processing Foundation Software Development Grant lasts four months. During this time, grantees are expected to work on their projects, and participate in mentorship sessions, town halls, and cohort check-ins.

Can I apply if I am not based in the United States?

Yes, the pr05 Processing Foundation Software Development Grant is open to applicants worldwide. We encourage individuals from diverse regions and backgrounds to apply. All meetings will be held online and we will work to find times that best accommodate participants.

Note

As a U.S-based organization, please note that we are unable to accept application from residents of countries under U.S embargo. You should also be legally allowed to work in your country of residence for whole duration of the program.

Can we apply as a collective?

Only individual developers are eligible to apply. The pr05 grant is intended to support solo software development work. If you're part of a team or collective, please refer to our Fellowship program instead.

What are you generally looking for in applications?

We look at your understanding of the project, proposed approach, relevant experience, and how this opportunity fits into your broader career path. Take some time to research and understand the specific project you're applying for. We don’t expect you to have everything figured out, but showing that you’ve considered the project context and technical challenges, and offering your own understanding or perspective, is very valuable. If something in the brief doesn’t make sense, don’t hesitate to question or challenge it. Be as specific and personal as you can.

How important are past Git/GitHub contributions?

It is helpful, but not required. Some of our past grantees had no prior contributions or even a GitHub account. Contributions to our projects can be helpful if they show that you’ve taken time to understand the context, but demonstrating your expertise in your application is more important. Set up the project locally, explore the codebase, try things out, and get familiar with how things work, but don’t feel pressured to submit pull requests just for the sake of it.

Can I apply to multiple projects?

To keep things fair for everyone, we ask that each person submit only one application. If you're deciding between projects, we recommend applying to the one where you feel your experience is the strongest.

Should I apply?

Absolutely! If you are interested in contributing to the Processing and p5.js ecosystems, we encourage you to apply.

I still have more questions!
