Improve `/register` related code

running /register <commonname> yaxim.org port 5222 fails with
connection attempt to server failed. Registering the user with gajim fails with "user already in use" (or similar, from memory) - registering a free user with gajim works but still fails with profanity.

The expectation is to receive a detailed error message, when appropriate and for user registration to work when it should.

This is for

sudo apt install profanity

The quality of the issue is not great. Not using the template, not formatting nicely and not providing correct information.

What really happens:

/register yaxim.org port 5222 is not a correct command. So surely that CAN'T work.
Profanity clearly states: Invalid usage, see '/help register' for details.

/register sometestusername yaxim.org port 5222 would be correct.

And running that does NOT return connection attempt to server failed. It returns Server error: unknown.
The "unknown" seems to be what we get from the server, which is what we display.

I added formatting to the initial post which reveals that indeed I ran the command with the correct parameters.

Well, that is what was visible. Also, it worked with gajim as stated in the original description.

I've been able to reproduce the Connection attempt to server yaxim.org port 5222 failed. error... if you don't enter the same password twice when being asked for it. The console then shows

That first isn't printed as an error, so maybe you overlooked that?

And if you enter the same password twice it indeed fails with Server error: unknown, but the server reports <error xmlns="http://etherx.jabber.org/streams"><host-unknown xmlns="urn:ietf:params:xml:ns:xmpp-streams"/><text xmlns="urn:ietf:params:xml:ns:xmpp-streams">This server does not serve yaxim.org</text></error>, so this could be improved.

So it seems the server is kind of misconfigured since it listens on yaxim,org, but only should operate on yax.im.

Registering a user has been successful via /register <username> yax.im port 5222 tls force.

Connecting to that account has been successful, but it seems that most stuff is not working properly, no service discovery, no roster, everything errors. E.g. if I request the server software I get the following:

To reduce the confusion a little bit: yaxim.org is the web server for the yax.im XMPP service as well as the yaxim client. There is no XMPP service on the yaxim.org domain, but port 5222 on the web server is forwarded to the actual yax.im service, which is run on the host xmpp.yaxim.org. The forwarding is done for historical reasons, because some clients don't know SRV, and there are some hard-coded https://yax.im/... URIs in a few places.

From a UX point of view, I would expect that the "This server does not serve yaxim.org" error message will be shown to the user.

For completeness, I just did:

/register foobar yax.im port 5222
and received:

Connection attempt to server yax.im port 5222 failed.

no other messages were shown. I can trigger the same message ( Connection attempt to server xmpp.yaxim.org port 5222 failed. )

If this is a server issue, why does it work with gajim but not with profanity?

For /register foobar yax.im, profanity says:

Connection attempt to server yax.im port 0 failed.
