## Record pre-processed audio
186+
187+
Sometimes it's convenient to record audio that is pre-processed with effects. The easiest way to do that is to use I/O plugins. Here is how it works:
188+
189+
1. Go to `Window > I/O Plugins` in the main menu.
190+
2. Double-click in the **Pre-Process** section.
191+
3. Select a plugin you need in the list.
192+
4. Click **Add**, then **Insert Plugin(s)**.
193+
5. For the plugin you've just inserted, click the **-** button above its name to open the dropdown list of available hardware inputs and select the input to record from.
194+
6. If you already have a track to record to, click the **-** button below the I/o plugin's name to open the dropdown list and select the output.
195+
7. If you don't yet have a track to record to, click the **+** button in the inputs list below for the I/O plugin and create a new track that is automatically connected to this I/O plugin.
196+
8. Arm the track, toggle recording mode, and press **Space** or click the **Play** button to start recording.

At this point, you may want to skip directly ahead to the [Arranging Tracks](/editing-sessions/arranging-tracks/) section to learn how to arrange the regions into a composition. If you plan on doing more complicated Recording than what we have discussed here, in particular with a multichannel soundcard, or from other JACK-enabled audio programs on your computer, you should also have a look at the [Understanding Routing](../understanding-routing) chapter.
