In the film Inception, the Cobb constructs dream worlds and plants dreams deep within the unconscious, gradually losing his ability to distinguish between dream and reality. To him, the most important object is the totem—a device to tell dreams from reality. If the spinning totem stops, it confirms reality; but as long as it keeps spinning, there’s no certainty—just as in the concept of Soundness. The image above evokes the film’s final scene. The children playing on the sandy field are Cobb’s children, and the totem lies stopped. While the film ends on an open note, I choose to believe the totem stopped spinning. Because for Cobb, that place was both happiness and certainty. And so, I want to say one thing to him: "The conclusion you've reached is not a star out of reach—it’s solid ground you can stand on."
