Find with pasted indented text strips leading whitespace, causing no matches

Find in non-regex mode does not match present text if indented multiline text is selected from the open file and pasted into the find text bar. This happened with tab indented text with one-two indent levels.
Also typing tab in the find text bar control just moves the cursor to the Replace text bar control below it.

To reproduce:

• select two-three lines of one-two level indented tab text, paste in Find bar, try to get match. Make sure the last line does not remove indent from the version in the Find control.

Not having luck reproducing this. Here's my sample text, with invisibles turned on:

I am able to select one of these instances (including a newline and a tab character) and either

• copy-paste it into the “find” field, or
• invoke the “Use Selection As Find Pattern” command (Cmd-E)

and have it work as expected:

Are there more specific reproduction instructions you can give me?

As for not being able to type a literal tab character into the “find” field: I agree that that's inconvenient, but I imagine that's how it works in VS Code and other IDEs as well. You can paste a tab character into the field as a workaround or else define your own custom command to insert a tab character via some obscure key binding.

I see what's happening, my report wasn't quite accurate.

This happens with space indenting. When pasting in to the find box, the leading spaces are stripped. They have to be manually aligned with the actual whitespace count to yield a match.

Copy all the second and third lines and enter into the Find bar.

I do think this should be fixed.

Does the same thing happen if you select the text and invoke Cmd-E? If not, that could be a workaround for this issue.

Hmm - that inputs the full text as expected.

What is that shortcut? It's not in https://github.com/nwinkler/atom-keyboard-shortcuts

That's the standard macOS shortcut for “use selection for find.” Underdocumented, but here's a page about it.

Should the selection in the program be fixed, so that select and copy -> paste to cmd-F has the same behaviour as cmd-E?
