Hydropower Expansion

Hi everyone,

A recent paper considers global hydropower expansions without building new dams (https://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1088/1748-9326/ac2f18/meta). The authors estimate potential of turning dams that are currently not used for electricity generation, into hydro-plants, instead of creating new dams which is a much more expensive and environmentally taxing endeavour. The paper builds on a dataset consisting of expansion potential and estimated associated cost.

In developing regions, current infrastructure is much less optimized than in industrial nations, as such the dataset might be of particular interest for PyPSA Africa.

The data of the paper is not openly available, the statement on data availability reads 'The data that support the findings of this study are available upon reasonable request from the authors'.
