Add versioning to XML elements to protect against evil mutations

Proposal:

In order to solve #126033 and #126037, I suggest adding a similar versioning as it is done for OrderedDict objects. While I could have opened a single issue for that, I think it's better to have separate issues since the resolution might be different (and since we may need to backport those changes). I also think it's better to discuss the versioning on a separate issue for posterity.

Has this already been discussed elsewhere?

This is a minor feature, which does not need previous discussion elsewhere

Closing since I don't think I'll need it actually. I managed to fix remove() with versioning so it's fine.
